BIG BRAIDS is a remote dance party held on a gravel bar island on the Susitna River downstream of the quaint village of Talkeetna, Alaska. Access is by watercraft (big raft, packraft or jet boat), or bush plane only. There are 2 internationally touring artists making their Alaska debut at this event (Photay & Celia Hollander) in addition to 3 of our favorite DJs in the state, and a local bluegrass band. We are also hosting an interactive video installation called The Dream Portal, imported from Kauai, HI.
BIG BRAIDS is about the intertwining of music and people when placed in a wilderness setting. Peace, Love, Unity & Respect are the driving principals behind this event. Food will be available to purchase and transportation can be arranged for those without boat or plane access. email mixmaster2stroke@gmail.com for more information or click the button below to RSVP

This event will be held on a gravel bar on the Susitna River just a few miles south of downtown Talkeetna. Access is via watercraft (raft, packraft, jet boat, SUP, etc) or by bush plane.
While the river is not technically difficult to navigate (class 1), this is swift, cold, turbid water and only experienced boaters should attempt this. The takeout is at the big bridge on the Parks Highway at the Susitna River, about a ½ day float from camp. A shuttle will need to be arranged for you and your party ahead of time.
The gravel bar is quite large and bush pilots have also landed there. Please exercise caution if you are planning to land here yourself, and feel free to inquire about beta.
We have also partnered with a local jet boat operator that you can charter to get you there. click the “LET’S GOOOOOO!!!!!” button above to find out about pricing.

While this is event is relatively close to Talkeetna, it should be treated as a wilderness experience, as we will be cut off from the road system.
Clothing: Bring layers and be prepared for all weather (sun, rain, cold, hot). Aside from that, we encourage everyone to wear a costume or some kind of festive attire.
Camping gear: tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, headlamp, and all other essentials
Food: will be available for purchase (dinner & breakfast), but make sure to bring any other snacks or meals you might want during your adventure.
Water: although we will be on a river, we recommend packing in all the water you will need as filtering water in glacial rivers can be difficult and clog filters quickly. At least one gallon per person per day.
PFD (life jacket): Anyone arriving via watercraft should be wearing a Personal Floatation Device.
Lawn games?: There is plenty of room for bocci, beach volleyball, frisbee, etc.
LEAVE NO TRACE: Whatever you bring, plan to pack it out with you. We truly want to leave this spot better than how we found it.

The lineup for this event is truly special. We have 2 performers making their Alaska debut (Celia Hollander & Photay), 3 of our favorite DJs in the state of Alaska, an inspired local bluegrass quartet, and a one of a kind interactive video installation:
Photay — website — Photay is the solo musical endeavor of composer/drummer/DJ/producer, Evan Shornstein. His enigmatic and mercurial sound transcends genre and is heavily influenced by weather, and nature. It’s characterized by unique textures, melodies and rhythms that truly have to be experienced to be understood.
Celia Hollander — website — Celia Hollander is a Los Angeles based composer, producer and performer. She has composed original music for feature films, and released a slew of records that combine acoustic and digital elements. Her work investigates themes such as shaping time through composition, surrendering to improvisation, and music as a natural phenomenon of dynamic systems.
Quinoa — Soundcloud —Instagram — Born of Tlingit Alaskan and Filipino roots, Quinoa has been a defining pillar of Anchorage's dance scene since 2019. He blends together deep house, hard techno, and melodic electronica to cultivate some of Alaska’s most intense dance floors and ethereal sunrise sets. Catch him at Alaska's biggest daytime parties, and it’s most underground nights.
bEAZY — Soundcloud — Instagram — Hailing from an undisclosed location within the mountains of Alaska bEAZY brings a fusion of ukg, house, dub, trance, dnb, and any other genre that fits his playful, energetic and psychedelic sound. His background as a mountaineering and backcountry ski guide inform his aesthetic into a cohesive sonic adventure that will get the most timid booty’s out on the floor until the wee hours.
DJ 2Stroke — Soundcloud — Instagram — DJ 2Stroke is one of a number of different projects by musican/producer/DJ/adventurer Butchy Fuego. The sound is an ever evolving eclectic blend of futuristic and psychedelic bass music. 2Stroke’s long running residency BUSH BASH has become a local favorite in Talkeetna, but his natural habitat is a remote party deep in the wilderness.
Grand Old Ospreys — Instagram — This local Talkeetna bluegrass quartet play traditional tunes with a modern spirit. Interweaving harmonies and delicate string work give way to a hypnotic web of dynamic and subtle melodies with the right dash of party.

We love kids & dogs! Gravel bars are a great and generally safe place for Alaska kids, provided they stay out of the river. Large game (bear, moose) encounters are very rare since we will be on an island and they would have to swim to get to us. Good dogs are welcome too.
Keep in mind there will be loud music playing into the night, so if your children or dogs are sensitive to that, there will be plenty of space to camp away from the main area.
Please observe the same LNT practices we expect of everyone else with kids and dogs.
-
Our goal is to truly leave no trace, so please help us to minimize any impact to this sacred and sensitive environment. we will have a privacy tent and a way to #2, however you may want to bring your own if you have the means.

Most likely it will be rain or shine. We plan to have a covered area for the dance floor and sensitive electronics
